Sand Smelt!

November 2009 - We've finally figured out that the black sand at Lake Superior is good for smelting steel!
In November, I gave it a try. With the help of Kevin Cashen, I did my first smelt. Below are some photos
to give you an idea of the process.

Bloom

The bloom. It's pretty cool to think, that sometime this winter, it will be
a knife and a few razors.

Updates to follow!

I can still make Knives! I have spent most of the last year learning how to make real razors,
not just a razor shaped knife. That kept the knife making on the back burner.
I have a very patient friend and customer who waited almost a year for this one.
It is his design and specs. It has a twist Damascus blade, Mammoth ivory scales and integral
bolsters and liners of wrought iron.
